Laya Rasooli
Artist

Laya Rasooli is an Afghan–New Zealand visual artist and Master of Architecture student based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Having moved across borders since childhood, her work asks where “home” is and what it means to belong.

Working with abstract, textured, often figurative painting, Laya layers colour and gesture to translate memories of migration, loss, and rebuilding into visual form. Her ongoing Who Am I series turns personal stories into shared spaces, inviting viewers to see their own journeys reflected in the work.

Alongside her studio practice, Laya is active in community and youth spaces, using art as a way to hold stories, create connection, and imagine more inclusive futures.
