Recent winner of the NZ Art Show People’s choice award (2025), Em Wafer is a full-time New Zealand artist and muralist known for her surreal dreamscapes and microcosmic worlds. She exhibits locally and internationally, and has collectors worldwide.
Unique enough to strike a chord with our own stories and universal enough to leave space for individual reflections, Em’s work addresses the subconscious. Glimpses of unseen places deeply felt yet never fully articulated connect us all, and a multitude of perspectives exist, each painting allowing us room for reflection.
Her inspiration is equally internal and external: surrealism, memory, spirituality, humour, conversation, gut feelings, a child on the autism spectrum. The work, circumstance, and intuition all inform each other, the process itself sometimes shifting concepts entirely!
