Dylan Huata
Artist | Fashion Designer | Dancer
Dylan Huata, a Māori artist known as Blanc-Phase, combines his talents in dance, writing, and visual arts with a passion for fashion and music. Currently developing his own clothing brand, Dylan embraces a multifaceted creative identity. Inspired by cartoons and comics from a young age, he committed to a full-fledged artistic career at 18, exploring mediums like acrylics, oils, pastels, and charcoal pencils.
Dylan’s work, which he describes as "puzzling, flowing and abstract," draws heavily on cubism. His pieces often incorporate a face, symbolizing the "Blanc-Phase" of his artistry, set against bright, pop-era colors blended with modern styles. Music, dance, and poetry profoundly influence his thematic focus. His artistic journey has expanded from smaller pieces to large-scale canvases and murals, notably around Auckland's Sky Tower, offering him a broader canvas to express his evolving ideas.
With an exhibition history that started at 21 and continued teaching roles, like at Pinot & Picasso, Dylan values personal growth over collaboration at this stage. Yet, he appreciates the benefits of public art-making, engaging in conversations that merge life’s narratives with the creative process.
