Mark Whippy
Artist | Tutor
Mark Whippy, a Kiwi-Fijian artist based in Auckland, harnesses his talent for expressive realism in his artwork, blending realism with abstract elements. From a young age, Mark found solace and expression in drawing and painting, a passion that has evolved into a robust artistic practice using oil paint, gouache, and charcoal.
His work, inspired by everyday life and the people within it, captures the beauty and narrative of everyday figures and portraits, reflecting his deep connection to his surroundings.
Mark’s artistic journey has seen a transition from depicting construction workers—a nod to his own life experiences and Auckland's construction boom—to broader themes of everyday people. His skill has matured significantly over the years, enhancing his ability to express looseness and emotion in his work.
Significant milestones include participating in the Adam Portraiture Awards, holding his first solo exhibition in 2021, and teaching figure drawing. Collaborations, like his upcoming exhibition with Freddy Fairclough at Studio One, play a crucial role in his creative process, bringing new pressures and inspirations.
