Maria Owens is an abstract expressionist artist from Denmark, now residing in New Zealand with her family. Formerly an early childhood teacher, Maria transitioned to art inspired by the desire to encourage her daughter's creativity during lockdown. She primarily uses Resene test pots, colored pencils, and oil pastels, and describes her process as intuitive and deeply emotional, finding joy in the flow of painting.

Her artworks, often inspired by her natural surroundings and personal memories, explore themes from her walks in the Waitakeres to her Danish childhood. Maria's art has evolved to a confident, daring expression, recognized by galleries like Railway Street Gallery and Studio. She enjoys participating in community art events like Art Battle, and values public art-making for the interactive experience it offers viewers, helping them understand the layered and puzzling nature of her creative process.
